Arts

Westlake Lutheran Academy has a robust Arts program that is designed to develop student talent for the benefit of others and the glory of God. We offer age-appropriate music, visual and performing arts opportunities for students in all grade levels.

PERFORMING ARTS

All students at Westlake work to develop the performing arts they have been gifted by God. Students have access points to singing, graphic arts, sound engineering, stage design, dancing and an annual, large-scale theatrical performance, the Spring Musical.  Students may participates in various roles with grades 5-9 taking on the leading roles, and the youngest students helps with some of the choir pieces and support roles/extras. Past performances include The Wizard of Oz, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and the Lion King.

BAND & ADVANCED BAND

Students in our lower school program learn the fundamentals of music by singing, using rhythm instruments, learning notes, and studying music theory. Middle School students have access to beginning and advanced band with instrument selections, choir, and choral production.

For Advanced Band participation, students are required to have at least one year’s experience in band. Instruments included are flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, bass clarinet, alto/tenor/bari saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba and percussion. Students who have experience playing bass guitar and piano may also participate in band.

The Advanced Band performs two concerts per school year — one at Christmas and one in the Spring. The band also travels to local nursing homes every December to perform for residents and this year they were invited to perform at First Colony Mall. In May, Westlake holds their annual Solo/Ensemble contest where students perform for a judge in their ensemble and as individual soloists.

PRAISE TEAM

Praise Team is a group of vocalists and instrumentalists (drum set, electric and acoustic guitar, bass guitar) that are chosen by audition. The Praise Team performs at chapel, in December for the nursing home trip, and local churches.

VISUAL ARTS

Lower School students attend art classes for 90 minutes each week, building a foundation in the elements and principles of art through experiences in many different types of media. Middle School students continue to develop those skills in grades 5 through 9 as they further explore 3D art, sculptures, perspective, pottery and beyond.
